A RESOLUTION TO OPPOSE THE REPEAL OF THE PROPERTY TAX IN NORTH DAKOTA
WHEREAS: The property tax is a mainstay of local revenue for townships, cities, counties, school districts and certain special entities; and
WHEREAS: Removing the property tax from local governments will make them more dependent on state control; and
WHEREAS: Repealing the property tax would severely impede the ability of local government to fund local problems; and
WHEREAS: Repealing the property tax would result in a new tax war to find replacement revenue sources; and
WHEREAS: Repealing the property tax would have deep and long-lasting negative impact on all working families in North Dakota; and
WHEREAS: Public sector workers, like teachers and firefighters, as well as those who work on local infrastructure projects will be the hardest hit; and
WHEREAS: There is a serious effort to repeal the property tax through an initiated measure in 2024; and therefore be it
RESOLVED: The North Dakota AFL-CIO will oppose repealing the property tax; and be it further
RESOLVED: The North Dakota AFL-CIO will work diligently to educate working families in North Dakota on the disastrous outcomes of repealing the property tax.
